FAN or FRIEND

The original word ‘fan’ describes a device used to move air around. However, since 1895 to the present it has become an Americanism short for fanatic.

Although I’m not a fanatic about baseball, I love the game enough to consider myself a Baseball Fan. So, in this sense, what once was fanatical is now something a little less.
There is a huge difference between being a fan of someone and knowing him or her personally. A good friend of mine is very defiantly a fan of Johnny Bench, the hall of fame catcher of Cincinnati’s Big Red Machine in the 1970’s. Not only a fan but he is much more because he knows Johnny personally, and coached him in Little League Baseball when Johnny was a Little Leaguer. I love everything I know about Johnny Bench, but I don’t know him and he doesn’t know me. That’s a big difference between my good friend’s relationship with Johnny Bench and mine. My point is this: America is filled with claim-to-be-Christians who are fans of Jesus Christ. However, few really have a personal relationship with Him. ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’    ``~Jesus Christ (Matthew 7:23 ESV) If everyone could get to Heaven, many would ask the question while pointing to Jesus: “Who is that?” Being a great fanatic about Christianity and never having a personal relationship with Jesus won’t get you inside the Pearly Gates, anymore than me saying I’m a great fan of Johnny Bench would get me into the players locker room.
